Maximising Natural Light in Terraced Houses

Why Terraced Houses Fight the Light
A mid-terrace house has windows on only two elevations. Party walls run down both sides, the plan is deep and narrow, and the hall in a Victorian terrace is often little more than a corridor with a gloomy stretch in the middle where no daylight reaches. Add a small rear extension or a downstairs bathroom carved out of the back room, and you have a property that feels darker than it really is.
The good news is that terraced homes respond beautifully to a few well-chosen interventions. Most of what follows is about being deliberate: decide where daylight enters, then help it travel.
Start With the Walls, Ceilings and Woodwork
Colour is the cheapest light-lifting tool you have. Cool greys and blue-based whites can make a north-facing room feel chilly and flat, while warm off-whites, soft stone and pale clay tones bounce light around and keep a room feeling welcoming. If the paint range publishes a light reflectance value, look for above 80 for a ceiling and above 70 for walls — those numbers do real work.
- Paint walls, ceiling and cornice in the same pale tone to erase the corners and make the room feel taller.
- Match skirting and architraves to the walls rather than picking them out in brilliant white; the room then reads as one calm, bright shape.
- Choose a low-sheen or eggshell finish in halls and bathrooms. Flat matt absorbs light, but a slight sheen bounces it without glare.
- Keep the ceiling white or near-white, and avoid heavy beams or dark timber cladding unless you have light to spare.
Bring Daylight In From Above
Roof windows are the single most effective upgrade in a terraced house. A mid-terrace property usually has a generous roof slope, and a rooflight over a stairwell, landing or rear bathroom can transform the middle of the plan where nothing else reaches.
Where a room sits below ground level or behind the main body of the house, a light well is worth considering. Line the well in white render or pale brick, glaze the top with a fixed pane or openable rooflight, and consider a glass floor panel or glazed internal window to push the light sideways into the room. Wall lights set into the well keep it useful after dark.
Sun tunnels suit narrow landings and small internal bathrooms where a full rooflight is not possible. They are modest, discreet and surprisingly effective on a dull day.
If you live in a conservation area or a listed building, check with your local planning authority before you order anything. Consent for roof alterations is often straightforward, but it is never automatic.
Borrow Light Between Rooms
Internal glazing is underused in British terraces. A glazed panel above a hall door, a set of glazed double doors between the living room and dining room, or a glass partition beside a staircase all let daylight flow from bright rooms into dark ones. Choose simple frames in a colour that disappears rather than ornate mouldings that draw the eye.
Where you can, widen a doorway or remove a wall entirely, subject to structural advice. An open-plan arrangement will never be as bright as a window, but it stops light being trapped in one room.
Reflect and Multiply What You Have
A large mirror hung opposite a window, or angled across a corner, effectively doubles the daylight in a room. Position mirrors so they catch sky or greenery rather than a blank party wall. Antique glass with a soft patina adds warmth; a plain sheet of mirror can look cold in a period property.
- Choose pale engineered oak, limestone or sisal over dark hardwood and heavy patterned carpet.
- Use a mirrored splashback in a small kitchen, or a sheet of glass over a dark worktop.
- Swap heavy curtains and pelmets for shutters with wide slats, linen roman blinds or voile, all hung as close to the ceiling as possible.
- Keep windowsills clear and glass clean; grimy sash windows cost you a surprising amount of light.
Lighting matters just as much from October to March. Layer it: a warm white ceiling wash, a reading lamp, a picture light over the mantel and dimmable circuits throughout. Uplighters aimed at the ceiling lift a dark hallway in a way a single pendant never will.
Keep It Feeling Cosy
Brightness should not tip into clinical. Pale rooms need texture to stay warm: wool, linen, aged brass, and a few plants that tolerate low light, such as ferns or snake plants. Resist filling every surface — a small room with three generous pieces feels more spacious than one crammed with twenty small ones. Get the light right and a compact terrace can feel twice the size it is.
